ThinkProgress - A Political Perspective

Think Progress is a project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. The Center for American Progress Action Fund is a nonpartisan organization. With the blog, CAPAF seeks to provide a forum that advances progressive ideas and policies.

We had an opportunity to talk to Amanda Terkel who is Assistant Editor for The Progress Report and ThinkProgress.org at the Center for American Progress. Amanda was formerly the Center’s Special Assistant for Strategic Planning. Her past positions have been with the Office of Senator Charles E. Schumer, New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, the 2004 presidential campaign of Senator Joseph Lieberman, and the Office of the Inspector General in the Office of Personnel Management. She graduated from Colgate University and serves on the Contemporaries Steering Committee at the Phillips Collection in DC.

Here is what Amanda had to say about ThinkProgress:

What is your blog about?
We are a project of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a progressive think tank in Washington, DC. We put forth progressive ideas and hit back against right-wing misinformation.

Tell us about yourself.
I am originally from a small town in upstate, NY, and graduated from Colgate University. I’ve now been at American Progress for approximately three years, and hope to be here a bit longer to see the blog grow even more.

Are you the only author / contributor?
We have a team of five people. I’m the Assistant Editor…and the only girl.

How did you get started?
ThinkProgress started in Feb. 2005, on President Bush’s State of the Union address. They liveblogged it with rapid-response rebuttals, which we still do each year. Up until that time, they were focusing on The Progress Report (http://www.progressreport.org), a daily newsletter with research, analysis, etc. Blogs were becoming big though, and they decided they needed another outlet to start hitting back on the right-wing spin more rapidly. I was at American Progress at that time, but I was in fundraising. I was always interested in media and journalism and joined the team in 2006.

What’s the purpose of your blog?
ThinkProgress puts out facts. The media, administration, lawmakers, and so many others put out wrong information and our role is to call them on it. We also put out progressive solutions to counter right-wing proposals. We also are able to quickly put up video snippets of press conferences, hearings, appearances, etc, which not only allows people to view them, but creates a visual record for future fact-checking.

Source of your content?
We get our content from everywhere. The television, news stories, other blogs, radio, social bookmarking sites, tips from people — anywhere.

How frequently do you write / post?
We try to put up a post at least once an hour, if not more.

Does your blog generate revenue?
No revenue, no ads.

Who visits your blog? Tell us a little bit about your readers.
We actually don’t know too much about our readers, but would love to know more. For all we know, they could be a bunch of pandas.

Would you like to add anything else?
If you like ThinkProgress, please sign up for The Progress Report (http://www.progressreport.org). And we love tips — we’re happy to grant anonymity!

Thanks for this — great blog!
