A Socialite’s Life - A Bird’s Eye View

In its own words: “A Socialite’s Life provides you with your recommended daily dose of celebrity gossip, photos, fashion news, and media speculation - brought to you in digestible bites. To be enjoyed with a martini.” I could’t agree more.

The site was created by Miu von Furstenberg and now editors Lisa Timmons and J. Harvey have claimed the territory - making it one of the hottest hangout arenas of the web! The site boasts readership of 26-35 old media-savvy visitors with over 30% earning more than $100K annually – making it one of the prime picks for advertisers. Here is a snapshot of the demographics, according to the site:

Age: The majority are 26-35 years-old.
Income: Over 60% earn more than $50K annually, of that 60%, 30% earn more than $100K annually.
Education: Over 65% are college graduates.
Location: Over 90% are U.S. readers.
Travel: Over 80% of readers have purchased airline tickets online, Hotel Reservations (>62%).
Media Purchased Online: CD’s (>65%), Books (>80%), DVD’s (>50%), Movie Tickets (>70%).
Other Online Purchases: Beauty products (>60%), Clothing (>80%).

One of the key revenue streams for the site is BlogAds. The cost of premium sponsorship for a month is $1,500 which is not bad at all if you consider the 7.3 million impressions your ad gets.

A Socialite’s Life claims its range of advertisers include Bravo, E! Entertainment Television, Ford Motors, Harper Collins, Sony Pictures Classics, MTV, McDonald’s, Speedo, Focus Features, CBS, Lion’s Gate Entertainment, DirectTV, Procter & Gamble, Arista, Random House, MGM, PETA, and the Discovery Channel featured in Page Six, BBC, Washington Post, NY Metro, VH1, Chicago Tribune, MSNBC, NY Daily News, Oxygen, USAToday.com, and The Village Voice. The site also has been featured in Page Six, BBC, Washington Post, NY Metro, VH1, Chicago Tribune, MSNBC, NY Daily News, Oxygen, USAToday.com, and The Village Voice.

Indeed, it has come a long way since its launch in August of 2003 – not too long if you really think about it. However, given the nature of the internet … you know what I am talking about!

Here is a brief history of the site, from the archives of the Wayback Machine.

Despite its great success, I believe the site could use a little bit of face-lift. It’s not that hard to get easily overwhelmed by ads appearing everywhere on the site – unless, of course, it indeed is one of the proven and intentional revenue-generating ad-placement strategies - that I am not aware of. Just my two cents.

I did not realize Socialite’s life was one of the key players too. I think media is too overshadowed by Perez Hilton. It needs some competetion. I am impressed by the stats of the site. Keep up the good work!
